We will begin with the study what I call "pure design." Pure design employs fundamental principles and we will lean and practice by making spots of ink or paint. A spot of paint can have three qualities: tone, measure and shape. While practicing pure design we are to be guided by these principles: rhythm, balance, harmony. "Pure design is the composition of tones, measures, shapes, for the sake of rhythm, balance, harmony, the principles of order and beauty." Tone means the value (as dark, light); or the color (as red, green, blue). Measure means the size (as long, short, large, small). Shape means the contour or bounding line (as straight, curved, square, round). Know your terms! Lets go to problem #1.... still doesn't make sense, does it? Well, that's how they taked way back in 1910.
