In 1912 Batchelder got his first big commission: To design, create, manufacture and install the interior of an icream parlor called The Chocolate Shop. It was a ceramic wonder. The restaurant was meant to be the first of a chain of themed sweet shops that never materialized. This first shop was themed after Holland and Dutch moteifs evoking the association with good chocolate. The shop still stands on 7th street in Los Angeles but you wont believe what it looks like now until you see it yourself. The Chocolate Shop has seen better days and so has the neighborhood.
